Demand Response Perspectives for Belgium

Abstract:
In this paper, we discuss the possible future of demand response (DR). After a short definition, a historical perspective on the development of DR programs is discussed. An overview of their possible use in electricity systems is given. The article then introduces DR potential in Belgium and shows that, in the long run, DR is a valid candidate to limit reliance on imports and increase system efficiency. We also highlight the fact that even the highest DR potential is not sufficient to overcome future challenges. In order to plan the use of this flexibility resource pragmatically, key success factors of DR programs, which will be of use to DR program designers, are detailed.
