Levent Ünsaldi

Revue Tiers-Monde, 2008, vol. n° 194, issue 2, 261-279

Abstract: Beneficiary of the Ottoman heritage, holder of institutional privileges, focus of the nationalist exaltation and powerful through conscription, the army is a permanent actor in the political life of Turkey. Though periodically withdrawn into its headquarters, this actor continues influencing the national destiny behind the scenes. This article intends to understand the political role of the army in Turkey and to distinguish its decisive levels.
