Abstract:
In Algeria, The reasons for the doublement of the unemployment level from 1990 to 1997 - reaching more than 24% of the working population - lie partly in the demographic and institutionnal factors. However, those features hardly explain the breaks in the unemployment growth trend. Neither do they reveal the causes for persisting under-employment despite the pro flexibility policy carried for more than ten years. This article analyses the causal link between the accumulation regime that pushes the economic growth and the labour market performance. Also, it evaluates the productivity and accumulation effort that is necessary to a mid-term reduction of unemployment.
