Abstract:
Over the last five years, growing scepticism regarding the role of microfinance and the desire to underscore efforts to create socially responsible finance have led microfinance actors to develop new approaches to measure and strengthen the social performance of microfinance institutions (MFIs). What is behind these recent developments ? What is their impact on the future of microfinance and its ability to meet clients? needs and create economic and social impact ? How are new approaches to social performance influencing the management of the microfinance sector, and the financial sector in general ? The authors aim to answer these questions, by first examining recent innovations in the field of social performance assessment and then presenting the results of such assessments through several case studies.
