Abstract:
?The career inequality between women and men still observed today is set in longheld discriminations. The exemple chosen here is that of women work inspectors in France between 1878 (date of their first recruitment) and 1974 (date of the diversification of employment in civil service and the merging with the department of Transporation and Agriculture). Until 1946, and according to regulations, female and male inspectors did not have access to the same positions, nor to the same geographic mobility: one could consider them as separate sectors. Women were fewer than men and the status of civil service of 1946, egalitarian in its principals, was established in a high numeric disparity (one woman inspector for five men). This act, which created the corps of female work inspectors, changed the available career paths: the social mobility of the inspectors originally coming from lower middle class no longer went through the position of teacher to integrate work inspection, but directly through the position of inspector.?
