Abstract:
Using a correspondence study focused on cashiers in the retail sector, we found that men and, specifically, French men whose parents are Moroccan are discriminated against. In order to interpret and identify the discrimination type ? statistical or taste-based ?, we implement an experimental design using competition degree and the stores? social and economic environment in an econometric study. Results show that men face a statistical discrimination because employers tend to prefer hiring women because they are supposed to deal better with bad work conditions. Discrimination against applicants of Moroccan origin seems to be due to employers? or customers? particular tastes.
