Abstract:
??We started the restructuring of the mining sector and have accomplished within a few months what took several decades for other countries to complete.? These words, pronounced by the Romanian prime minister in December 1997, evaluate quantitatively the success of buy-outs which led, in less than three months, to a reduction of 39 % of the workforce in the Jiu Valley mining industry. This article analyzes this event by placing it in the context of the following buy-outs until 2013. It offers new interpretations, combining various levels of analysis and a longitudinal perspective, in order to explain the miners? consent to voluntary redundancies and the way restructuring affected, objectively and subjectively, the miners? social group. The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, it elaborates on the importance of the legacy of state socialism in the transformations of labor after 1989. On the other hand, it examines ongoing identity transformations in relation to the meanings and values attached to work.?
