Abstract:
?Union busting and company unions are common among big retailers in Spain. Their objective is to assure a strong control of the labour force. Two elements are central to understand the role of company unions in these enterprises. In the first place, the organization of work, based upon an ?authoritarian system of gift to gift? : the direction presents most of the working conditions improvements as discretional gifts in exchange of the workers? submission and availability. This weak codification of working conditions is used to punish the workers who approach the ?wrong? trade unions and to support the company unions. In the second place, the importance of workers? schedules? ??? ??which is the main concern in the control of the labour force in big retail : company unions have allowed a strong flexibilization of schedules in the collective bargaining.?
