‪Positions et transmissions socioprofessionnelles des femmes et des hommes au sein de lignées franciliennes‪

Travail et Emploi, 2018, vol. n° 154, issue 2, 43-70

Abstract: ?Social mobility and stratification have long been captured by comparing the respondent?s position with that of his father (more rarely his mother). Using data from the ? ?Biographies et entourage? ? (Event Histories and Contact Circle) survey, we seek to broaden the scope of comparison by relating an individual?s occupational position to that of his entourage. This survey, from a sample of Paris-region respondents born between 1930 and 1950, has collected data on the entirety of their professional (and residential and family) life course as well as on the major stages of those of their parents (even grandparents), partners, in-laws, siblings, and children. The process of occupational transmission can thus be explored across generations born from the end of the nineteenth century up to the early 1980s. The typologies carried out with sequence analysis make it possible to describe these complex transmissions and to better characterize socio-occupational environments by going beyond the single socio-professional position of the head of household. A quadripartition of these urban classes is shown: working- and upper-class lineages characterized by strong social reproduction; middle classes of working-class origin and therefore in a situation of upward mobility; lineages of independent origin. The analysis highlights the role of women in occupational transmission, particularly that of the activity of mothers in upward mobility of the respondents of working-class origin.?
