Abstract:
?The purpose of this article is to show how low wages in home care services, where jobs are considered ?low skilled?, are due to a set of mechanisms resulting from a socio-political and socio-economic construction. These mechanisms are due to both public and private strategies that we seek to clarify, on the basis of a synthesis of empirical work on the field of personal services. Three mechanisms for the non-recognition of these occupations have been identified, each of which is present both in national policy orientations and in employers? human resources strategies. It appears that the home help sector illustrates trends present in many other highly feminised service activities (such as cleaning, hotel and catering or retail).?
