Abstract:
This paper examines the links between labour market tightness, hiring difficulties and search effort of recruiters using Dares’ (Direction de l’animation de la recherche, des études et des statistiques) Offre d’emploi et recrutement (Ofer) 2016 survey. We build a typology according to the tightness intensity, the anticipated recruitment difficulties, the competition from other employers and the available job seekers, allowing us to identify five classes of occupations. Two of them associate high tightness and anticipated difficulties. With this typology, we study the hiring difficulties mentioned ex post by employers and their recruiting efforts. Hiring in a tight occupation is not always harder but more often results in a lack of image or applications. Concerning the relationships between tightness and recruiting efforts, recruiting in tight occupations does not imply the use of more search channels but a higher number of elements required from candidates and more individual interviews with them.
