Abstract:
The line of research pursued by Albert Hirschman, culturally open to the various fields ofthe social sciences, is in illuminating contrast withthe risks of retreat in a cultural ivory tower underthe false colours of technicalities and specialistformalism introduced into economic science. Theworks of A. Hirschman represent a "voice" of decisiveimportance when faced with the challengesfor economic research as it comes up against thecrucial problems of humanity and for choices ineconomic policy in defence of the interests ofthe community as a whole, especially in this prolongedperiod of international economic crisis. In these pages certain crucial aspects of AlbertHirschman's research are addressed not only tocommemorate the work of a master but also toopen the way to some serious thinking about thedirections he proposes to tackle the issues thateconomists and policy makers will be encounteringin the next few years.
