Abstract:
In a highly competitive global economy, improved access to financing by innovative small and medium-sized enterprises has become essential for enhancing competitiveness and meeting the objectives of the Lisbon Partnership for Growth and Jobs. Although venture capital is a small part of the larger asset class of alternative investments, it is essential for the growth of innovative firms. At present, the potential of EU venture capital markets is not fully exploited. In fact, the lack of an equity investment culture, market fragmentation, informational problems and high costs are among the main reasons for this market failure.
