Abstract: The paper deals with the issue of corruption and the underground economy, two phenomena of economic and financial criminality that are extremely spread in our days. The approaches made during the work concern both the theoretical and practical aspects of corruption and the underground economy for the member countries of the European Union during 2007-2015. The statistical technique used is the Pearson correlation, which maps the degree of linear association between the two variables. The results of the study do not demonstrate the direct relationship between corruption and the underground economy for the analyzed period. A high level of corruption does not positively determine the development of the underground economy. This research is purely based on information provided by recent research in the field. To overcome this limit we plan to conduct future research into two main directions: identifying the determinants of corruption and underground economy in Romania compared to other European countries.
