Abstract: In the context of globalization, it is necessary to change the whole concept in order to ensure a sustainable development and to ensure a balance between the interests of those who bring foreign direct investments with those of the states and, why not, with the interests of the labor force. Given the vulnerability of strategic areas, as result of foreign investments made in recent decades, policies on this type of investment are under review, in an attempt by governments to rebalance the rights and obligations of the state with those of investors. Starting from the elements which are describe above, the objective of this article is to contribute to the scientific research on the sustainable developments that can be realize through the foreign direct investments, also analyzing the investments made for the promotion of the renewable energy sources. This article will focus on describing the elements that characterize sustainable development, starting from the financing sources coming from foreign direct investments and from how they impact the evolution of GDP. We will carry out an analysis on the developments in this area. We will refer to the measures taken by a number of countries, in order to reduce the exposure of the energy domain to the risks deriving from foreign direct investments.
