EVOLUTION OF E-COMMERCE IN ROMANIA, AT THE ENTERPRISES LEVEL, IN THE EU CONTEXT

Abstract: The new economy, the knowledge-based society, brings to the forefront a new segment of national economies: e-commerce. Its prerequisites have been globalisation and the unprecedented development of information and communication technology. This paper focuses on the evolution of e-commerce in Romania at enterprises level in the EU context, in the period 2010-2020. In this regard, three indicators published by EUROSTAT were analysed: the share of the enterprises with e-commerce sales, the share of the enterprises purchasing online, the share of the enterprises' total turnover sales from e-commerce. From this perspective, the EU average, the maximum and minimum values reached by the Member States and the disparity indices were monitored. As expected, the results of the analysis revealed the existence of Community differences for all the indicators studied. The gaps between maximum and minimum values were significant. The indicator where the best situation of our country was noted was the share of the enterprises' total turnover sales from e-commerce. Also, at the level of the three indicators studied, Romania performed best for large companies. The year 2020 was the best for Romania due to the acceleration of electronic transactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
