Abstract:
In higher education, the concept of a “moral university” signifies an institution that not only disseminates knowledge but also upholds and instils ethical values. This article examines the ideal of the moral university in the context of Romania’s academic environment and contrasts it with the on-the-ground realities. The discussion is grounded from the perspective of ethics and academic integrity, drawing on relevant literature about moral responsibility, institutional ethics, and higher education in Romania and Europe. First, the paper outlines the theoretical ideals of a moral university including its responsibilities to society and core values like integrity, honesty, and academic freedom. Next, this study reviews the frameworks and initiatives developed in Europe and Romania to promote ethics in academia, such as codes of ethics, integrity courses, and oversight bodies. Furthermore, the research delves into the Romanian academic reality, highlighting gaps between ideals and practice such as cases of academic misconduct, perceptions of corruption, and challenges in implementing ethical standards. Through examples and case reflections, this paper illustrates how Romanian universities often struggle at the boundary between compliance and genuine ethical culture. Throughout the analysis, the narrative remains neutral and evidence-based, drawing on scholarly literature and concrete examples to provide a fluent yet robust account of morality in Romanian higher education. By understanding both the ideals and the realities, it can be better appreciating the ongoing efforts needed to transform Romanian universities into truly moral institutions that live up to their highest ethical callings. The conclusion underscores that achieving the moral university is a continuous process requiring sustained effort, transparency, and moral leadership.
