Abstract:
This paper takes a broad view on regional competition in the European Union beginning with recent literature in international trade, regional agglomeration and multinational strategies, focusing on the driving forces of regional competition. Regions can try to develop regional strengths by adopting appropiate policies. Many complementarities exist among European regions and those can be strengthened by ambitious project of market integration, regional adjustement and convergence between higher and lower income regions. Regional integration can contribute to the intensification of strategic competition among regions. This is particularity the case of multinational companies that base their investments on a detailed comparison of regional productivity and cost levels. In this context, regions can stimulate business development by subsidies, tax breaks, reduced labour cost, etc.
