 The Role of Institutions and Organisations in Mitigating Social Crises - Rosia Montana CaseCornelia Neagu
Revista de Economie Industriala (Journal of Industrial Eonomics), 2004, vol. 2, issue 2, 3 Abstract: The mining project Rosia Montana Gold Corporation led to national and international opposition and the appearance of some local resistance movement. Among institutions and other organisations that clearly expressed their oposition regarding that project, focusing upon the disadvantages for Romanian economy and proposing economic alternatives for the development ot this area, there were Association of Goldminers "Alburnus Maior", "Pro Patrimonio" Foundation and the Romanian Academy. The first step made by the researchers of the Romanian Academy have underlined that the exploitation of this gold ores implies a lot of a major risks (long term damage of the environment by using cyanides and the irreversible breakdown of natural landscape)which is in opposition to the fundamental objective of sustainable development. By their activities, institutions and organisations amd the researchers of the Romanian Academy have succeded to draw the attention of the decision-makers fot both the great risks, and the benefit of Rosia Montana project, and the economic development alternatives ot the area, demanding the authorities to put an end to that project.
