Abstract: Coming near of joining the Europen Union the Romanian economy needs foreign capital both for its own revitalization and growth and for consolidating its position among the European and world states. The paper presents the main elements to describe the foreign investments in Romania until 2003 and comments of the current status. The SWOT analysis especially reveals the opportunities and the risks to face the mechanism of attracting foreign investors to the Romanian economy, apart from the positive aspects and the weaknesses of the process. Basically, we need to be proactive towards the present-day increased interest shown by the foreign capital to us, meanwhile knowing very well the European specific legislation and the multinationals' operational mechanisms in order to avoid the shortcomings already faced by other European countries, which recently joined EU.
