Abstract: Based on the definition of social enterprise, this article analyses the companies operating within the sphere of social integration through work from the concept of social enterprise. A brief analysis is made of the process of institutionalisation of work integration social enterprises in Spain. The main results of the empirical work in Spain are shown here. This work was carried out within the framework of the European PERSE project analysing the social and economic role played by WISES (Work Integration Social Enterprises) among different European countries. Results regarding the characteristics of the social enterprise are shown - typology, legal forms, type of economic activity, billing, type of clients- as well as characteristics of the workers involved in the integration process: their socioeconomic profile, types of employment contract, channels by which they arrive at the social enterprise. The article concludes stressing the differences between the two types of integration companies and the validity of the “Social Enterprise” theoretical focus in analysis of Spanish WISES.
