Abstract:
Citrus fruits and outdoor horticultural produce are the most characteristic types of irrigated crops along the Valencian coast, where a smallholding structure is the main system. The chief problem with this smallholding structure is its management. This could be solved by the existence of cooperatives serving large areas made up of plots of land that can be mechanised (at least one hectare), under the direction of a single technical manager. This study employs multiple criteria programming to conduct a quantitative analysis of the role of agricultural cooperatives in the viability of small farms. The results of this analysis suggest that the system could benefit from making certain technological improvements that would favour the viability of smallholdings, without the need to form shared agricultural areas, an alternative that is not at all popular within the sector.
