Abstract: The idea of rural development as "the process of balanced and self-sufficient revitalisation of the rural environment based on its economic, social and environmental potential through a regional policy and the integrated application of territorial measures by participating organisations" supports the changes introduced by the European Union, including the requirements arising from the concept of Sustainable Development. We currently see the concept of "sustainable development" as something that pursues and demands an ethical defence, which is beginning to become apparent as a "need" (in the meaning given to this term in our description), yet also endeavours to break with the ideas about modernity, which has led to the crisis or moral decline called post-modernity, with phenomena such as the denial of being, the death of metaphysics, the tyranny of ethical relativism and the fallacy of technocracy. The ethical aspects on which international matters of sustainable development must be based revolve around the need for human solidarity. However, a clearly restrictive understanding of human reality turns the common good into mere socio-economic well-being, which is completely lacking in any significance or deeper raison d'étr.
