An Early Canadian Contribution to Mathematical Economics: J. B. Cherriman's 1857 Review of Cournot

Robert Dimand

Canadian Journal of Economics, 1988, vol. 21, issue 3, 610-16

Abstract: Cournot's Researches into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth ( 1838) was ignored by the economics profession for forty years before its rediscovery by Stanley W. Jevons and Leon Walras. In those years, the only published recognition of it was a ten-page review in 1857 b y Canadian mathematician J. B. Cherriman. This paper examines Cherrim an's able analysis of Cournot's methodological and substantive contri butions. Since Cherriman came to Canada from a fellowship at Cambridg e, his review throws light on the question of whether Cournot's work was known to "the Whewell group of mathematical economists" at Camb ridge, who have been the subject of much recent journal discussion.
