Pobreza, género y diferencias en la participación y ocupación en el sector informal en México

Abstract: La literatura reciente sobre el sector informal incorpora la noción de heterogeneidad y sostiene que no deben ignorarse las peculiaridades de sus subdivisiones. Al analizar la relación interactiva entre género, nivel de pobreza y posición en la ocupación, la evidencia empírica presentada en este trabajo confirma la importancia de incorporar esta noción en estudios empíricos centrados en México. Los resultados muestran una relación positiva y significativa entre el nivel de pobreza y la diferencia en la probabilidad de que las mujeres y los hombres participen en el sector informal como trabajadores por cuenta propia y subordinados ***** Recent literature on the informal sector incorporates the notion of heterogeneity and argues that the peculiarities of its subdivisions should not be ignored. Analyzing the interactive effects of gender, poverty level, and occupation, the empirical evidence presented in this paper confirms the importance of incorporating this notion in empirical studies focused on Mexico. The results show a positive and significant relationship between the level of poverty and the difference in the probability of women and men to participate in the informal sector as self-employed and subordinate workers.
