Abstract:
The aim of this article is to evaluate the efficiency of teaching activities carried by public higher education institutions and to examine their potential determinants. The analysis takes into account 50 HEIs over the period 2009–2012. The efficiency scores are calculated on the basis of nonparametric DEA method. It was estimated that among potential efficiency determinants, the proportion of professors and women among academic staff is positively correlated with the efficiency scores. Similarly, larger higher education institutions (the size measured by the number of students) are more efficient. Contrary, the share of teaching subsidies from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education is negatively correlated with universities’ efficiency (the higher percentage of subsidies from the Ministry in total revenues, the lower the efficiency).
