Abstract:
In recent decades, Chile has implemented fiscal responsibility policies, which have generated substantial benefits for the country. In 2000 these policies were institutionalized following the structural balance approach, which to date has been applied both in booms and in the 2008-2009 international financial crisis. In light of this experience, this paper proposes to take additional steps to ensure the long term sustainability of our public finances. The recommendations include, among others, aspects of information and transparency, the methodology for calculating the structural balance, strengthening fiscal institutions and the management of assets and debt.
