Abstract:
This essay tells the story of the unconsummated attempts of Eduardo Frei Montalva, some of his ministers and other members of the Christian Democratic Party to prevent the election of Salvador Allende as President of the Republic by the Congress in October of 1970. These intentions were discussed with the U.S. Ambassador Edward Korry, but U.S. participation in the plans described in this essay was marginal, which demonstrates the fundamental importance of the agency of local actors in a relevant situation within the international politics of the Cold War and the limits of American power. American diplomatic records of the time constitute the main source of this essay. The information provided by these records has not been explored, analyzed and exposed systematically by other academic works based on these sources. This essay, therefore, seeks to fill a void in the literature about the Chilean presidential election of 1970 based on the U.S. diplomatic records that have been declassified since 1999.
