Abstract:
This paper studies the impact of the introduction of the Senior Executive Service System (SESS) on the Chilean public health sector. It focuses on how the system has influenced health service area directors and their hospital management as measured by the following indicators: average length of stay of patients in hospitals, bed turnover, operating room occupancy rate, and inpatient mortality rate. The empirical analysis was carried out using longitudinal data for the period January 2003 to December 2010 covering 27 health services. Results show that directors of health service areas chosen through SESS improved the productivity indicators considered in the analysis.
