Abstract: In §1 of this mainly expository paper I sketch a picture of classical American pragmatism (Peirce, James, Dewey). In §§2-3, I delve into the pragmatist vein that is visible in the early works of Heidegger and the latter works of Wittgenstein. Finally, in §4, I go into some aspects of physics that demand a pragmatic approach to scientific truth, instead of the substantialist (chosiste) approach common among those who expect to find in natural science a surrogate for the withered religion of their childhood.
