Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to review the current international debate about democracy and its threats, highlighting the factors that explain the abandonment of the democratic optimism that prevail a decade ago. Among them are the problems of efficiency and representativeness of the already consolidated democracies and the emergence of a new type of citizen, much more empowered, demanding and dissatisfied. Along with this, the evolution of many new democracies in an authoritarian direction has been observed. Finally, there is the growing challenge of authoritarian regimes of great significance, particularly China and its meritocratic model of government.
