Abstract:
The paper presents the situation of housing affordability in Romania, in the recent period (2020-2023), influenced by higher housing costs, for shelter and utilities, corroborated with other factors, previous and recent, such as the insufficiency of housing relative to demand, limited disposable incomes, etc., which condition the access of different categories of the population to adequate housing, essential for the quality of life. It also highlights the need to take measures that contribute to its improvement. In this regard, indicators that express housing affordability and, complementary, indicators that reflect the population's ability to provide for the necessary housing expenses and the housing situation affected by it are analyzed, in dynamics, at the national level compared to the European average. The data used are provided, mainly, by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat – Income and Living Conditions Survey – EU-SILC), by the National Institute of Statistics (NIS – Tempo-online) and by the Research Institute for Quality of Life (RIQL).
