Relationship Between Sleep Hours and Physical Activity in Secondary School Students

Abstract: This study analyzed the relationship between sleep hours and the practice of physical activity in high school students in the East Region of the Dominican Republic. A descriptive cross -sectional design with a quantitative approach was used. The sample was composed of 1,013 students, and the data were collected through the International Student Lifestyle Questionnaire (CIEVA). The statistical analysis, carried out with descriptive and comparative techniques, allowed to identify sleep patterns and physical activity levels in relation to the recommendations of the World Health Organization. The results showed that 86% of the participants do not meet the minimum recommendations of physical activity, while 74.1% sleep less than 8 to 10 hours suggested, with greater prevalence in women. Likewise, a negative relationship between sleep deprivation and physical inactivity was evidenced. These findings highlight the need to implement integrated educational and public policies that promote healthy lifestyles in the adolescent population.
