Ergonomic risks and self-care practice of nursing staff in healthcare function

Abstract: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in nursing staff represent a growing problem worldwide, associated with long working hours, poor posture, and physical handling of patients. The objective of this study was to review recent literature (2020-2024) to identify the main ergonomic risks and self-care strategies applied in this sector. The methodology consisted of a systematic review of scientific databases, selecting studies on MSDs and preventive practices in nursing. The results show that the most frequent MSDs are low back pain, rotator cuff tendinitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Most cases are related to inadequate mobilization techniques and prolonged maintenance of static postures. The most effective interventions include ergonomics training, active breaks, and physical exercise programs. However, deficiencies persist in continuing education and the practical application of preventive measures. Furthermore, work-related stress is identified as a factor that exacerbates physical symptoms. It is concluded that there is a need to strengthen ergonomic education and self-care programs, promoting healthy work environments and periodic assessments that improve the conditions and well-being of nursing staff.
