Working conditions and manifestations of stress among preschool teachers in Barranquilla, Colombia

Abstract: Workplace stress among teachers is a growing problem, especially at the preschool level, where emotional, administrative, and pedagogical demands converge, affecting educators' mental health. This study aimed to analyze the levels of work-related stress among preschool teachers in the District of Barranquilla (Colombia), as well as to identify associated organizational factors. A quantitative, descriptive approach was applied using the ILO-WHO Workplace Stress Questionnaire, which assesses seven dimensions related to the work environment. The sample consisted of 29 teachers from a public institution. The results reveal that 79.1% of participants experience some level of stress, with the most critical dimensions being the influence of leadership and organizational territory. In contrast, peer support and organizational climate were perceived positively. These findings allow us to conclude that, although protective factors exist among peers, stress primarily originates from structural flaws in institutional management. The need to strengthen occupational health programs, educational leadership training, and the implementation of psychosocial prevention strategies is highlighted, to improve teachers' quality of life at work and the effectiveness of the early childhood education process.
