Presented by data on the development of the main directions of startups in the regions of the Russian Federation.The features of the development of startups in such areas as education, finance, e-commerce and personnel management solutions are reflected. The essential problems of the development of small and medium–sized businesses in modern conditions are shown, which, according to the author, include: structural problems of the development of regional economies, the underdevelopment of the mechanism for attracting investment in services, agriculture and other industries, the problems of developing new competitive industries and reducing taxes, developing export potential and solving social problems.The necessity of targeted state support for small and medium-sized businesses, identification of opportunities for the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in all regions of the country is indicated.
