Treatment abandonment-continuity factors

Abstract: Adherence to medical treatment is a fundamental process for patient well-being, but can be affected by a number of factors both internal and external. Factors that can influence adherence include economic and social problems, urgency of treatment, fear of side effects, and the stigma associated with the disease. The importance of establishing a collaborative relationship and therapeutic alliance between the patient and the health professional to improve adherence is emphasized. The need for awareness on the part of both health care actors is highlighted, recognizing that therapeutic adherence is fundamental for successful treatment. The importance of overcoming the economic gap and patient resistance to spending to ensure effective medical care is also suggested
