Abstract:
This study examined the influence of institutional‑based reward systems on student academic performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) within public secondary schools in Makueni County, Kenya. Guided by the Path‑Goal Theory, the research employed a descriptive research design and utilized multiple sampling techniques including simple random, stratified, and purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to principals, teachers, and student leaders as well as interviews with principals. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS to generate descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. Findings indicated that reward systems positively influence KCSE performance, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of r = 0.527. The study recommends increased government support for instructional resources, improved school environments, and leadership practices that motivate both teachers and students to enhance academic achievement.
