The Role of Financial Technologies in Enhancing Internal Control Effectiveness: Evidence from Indo Zambia Bank

Abstract:
This study explored the role of Financial Technologies (FinTech) in enhancing internal control effectiveness at Indo Zambia Bank, Lusaka, Zambia. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was employed, combining quantitative data from 140 staff surveys with qualitative insights from ten key informant interviews drawn from compliance, internal audit, risk management, and digital operations departments. The study examined three FinTech constructs—automated monitoring systems, artificial intelligence-based fraud detection tools, and digital transaction platforms—and evaluated their relationship with internal control effectiveness in terms of procedural efficiency, reporting reliability, and regulatory compliance. Findings revealed weak but statistically significant positive relationships between FinTech adoption and internal control effectiveness (r = 0.195 to r = 0.291), indicating that technology alone is insufficient to fully optimize control systems. Staff perceptions were generally positive regarding procedural efficiency and automated reporting; however, gaps remained in proactive fraud prevention, cybersecurity preparedness, and back-office integration. The study concludes that the effectiveness of FinTech in strengthening internal controls is contingent upon governance structures, staff competency, vendor management, and regulatory alignment. It recommends enhanced integration of back-office FinTech systems, improved fraud detection mechanisms, strengthened cybersecurity training, and robust vendor oversight. The findings contribute to the literature on digital banking governance in developing economies and provide practical implications for management and policymakers.
