Abstract: This paper examines the effects of public funding of agricultural research and development on rural poverty in the States of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). To conduct this analysis, a dynamic panel comprising seven (07) WAEMU states was constructed using secondary data from the World Bank and IFPRI databases over the period 2000 to 2020. To correct for the endogeneity generated by the dynamic panel, the estimation is done using the Generalized Moment Method (GMM) in system. The results show that public spending on agricultural research and development contributes to reducing rural poverty by increasing agricultural income. Thus, it is recommended that WAEMU States make efforts in the allocation of public resources in the area of agricultural research and development to boost the development of the agricultural sector and significantly reduce rural poverty.
