The image of the Arctic in the institutional political discourse of the United States: a corpus study

Abstract: Background. In recent decades, the Arctic region has become a focal point of intense attention for the global community. The article examines the corpus of the US institutional political discourse texts addressing Arctic issues. It explores the verbal means used to construct the image of the Arctic within the sphere of the US authorities’ political communication. Purpose. To identify the main verbal characteristics of the Arctic region as presented in the institutional political discourse of the United States from 2022 to 2025. Materials and methods. The primary research method is corpus analysis using the Sketch Engine corpus manager. The study also employs discourse analysis, incorporating other methods such as lexico‑semantic analysis and content analysis. Results. Through frequency analysis of keywords in the Sketch Engine corpus manager, significant characteristics of the Arctic’s image conveyed in US institutional political discourse have been identified. This discourse is dominated by the thematic fields of “Threat to Military Security”, “Legislation and Authorities”, “Ecology”, and “Cooperation”. The Arctic is presented as an object and a place threatened by both external and internal factors, yet one that remains under the protection of responsible US leadership.
