Level of knowledge of parents of chronically ill children about sugary medicines as a risk factor for tooth decay

Abstract: Introduction: An observational descriptive study was conducted at the Juan P. Garrahan Paediatric Hospital in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires during the period August - December 2023 to determine the level of parental knowledge of caries risk factors associated with chronic consumption of sugary medicines in hospitalised and outpatient children. Methodology: A total of 75 parents were evaluated for the study. Inclusion criteria: infants from 6 months to 13 years of age. Results: 73% prolonged hospitalisation, 67% average chronic use of medication, 55% use of sugary medication, 75% of parents do not know what care should be taken for children who chronically use sugary medication and 86% did not receive oral health education during hospitalisation. Conclusion: These results should be considered in the design of a preventive intervention for Oral Health that contributes to deepen the knowledge of parents.
