Ischemic stroke and its prevalence according to the TOAST scale at the Alberto Eurnekian Hospital in Ezeiza

Abstract:
Ischemic stroke is an important cause of disability and death worldwide. At the Alberto Eurnekian Hospital in the city of Ezeiza, ischemic strokes are one of the most prevalent pathologies. The study is carried out to determine, through background analysis, risk factors and complementary imaging studies, the different cerebral and vascular territories affected in patients who suffered ischemic stroke in that hospital, in the interval of one year. This is an observational, descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study with a quantitative paradigm. Eligible participants are hospital patients over the age of 50, of both sexes. Brain CT scans were visualized from 51 patients who were analyzed according to the TOAST scale. The results showed that 47.05% of these patients suffered atherothrombotic ischemic strokes; 25.5% of patients with stroke of undetermined cause due to normal CT scans; and 13.7% patients with stroke of cardioembolic and lacunar causes. The TOAST scale has been an element of vast importance in the tomographic inspection, allowing to corroborate and group the lesions in terms of their size, together with the comorbidities presented by the patients. The most prevalent type of ischemic stroke is atherothrombotic, and the main risk factor was hypertension
