Abstract: Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are understood as a group of diseases or disorders that affect the heart and blood vessels, including cerebrovascular diseases, coronary disease, peripheral arterial disease, pulmonary embolism, among others, with high morbidity and mortality rates. to characterize cardiovascular diseases based on their prevalence and cardiovascular risk from an updated perspective Method: a bibliographic review was conducted. The search was performed in the following databases: Scielo, SCOPUS, PubMED and DOAJ. 41 investigations were selected to develop this review article Development: the impact of cardiovascular diseases involves limitations that have physiological repercussions. Risk factors can be divided into two groups: modifiable and non-modifiable. Cardiovascular risk is the sum of several factors that include characteristics of the patient and their relationship with their social spheres. The data on the evolution of the disease, habits and lifestyles, the presence or absence of complications secondary to cardiovascular diseases within others are grouped into the conditions specific to the individual the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases has remained stable; with a tendency to grow. Its risk factors affect and manifest themselves in all spheres of the patient's life; they require a comprehensive approach to prevention and health promotion. In turn, the level of cardiovascular risk does not only depend on previously defined variables, but requires new criteria to achieve better management and therapeutic action
