Vitamin C supplementation in cancer patients: Systematic review of effects and results

Abstract: Cancer is an important cause of illness and death worldwide, challenging public health. Although advances have improved survival and quality of life in cancer patients, the side effects of conventional treatments are of concern. Vitamin C supplementation has sparked interest due to its antioxidant properties and its potential in the treatment of cancer. Studies have reported improvements in quality of life and reduction in fatigue in patients treated with Vitamin C, but there is still controversy about its effectiveness and safety. The study design was that of a systematic review. A comprehensive search was conducted in the PubMed database using a combination of relevant medical and scientific terms. A total of 28 studies were identified from the initial search. Of the 28 studies identified, 6 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The effectiveness of vitamin C in the treatment of cancer is controversial. Some studies suggest effectiveness in skin lesions and safety in complementary use, while others do not support its use in cancer patients. More research is required to define its role in oncological treatment.
