Abstract: The Association Agreement with the European Union created a bridge for the economic development of the country based on European market principles. By developing in this way the retail market with national and foreign capital, domestic and foreign trade was facilitated. The Republic of Moldova is in the process of updating the world through a common economic policy and security, manifested by the development of retail chains in the food field, a relatively new trading system for the domestic market, the food market is characterized by competition between international and national networks, and the coexistence of traditional trade patterns with modern food retail formats. Clarivate Analytics, Google Scholar, and Research Gate databases were used for documentation. Data for the research were selected from official information placed on the website by the Competition Council, National Bureau of Statistics, and commercial reports of food retail networks of Moldova. The research results, based mainly on secondary data, show that the retail market has a high degree of concentration, the Herfindahl-Hirschman concentration index having a calculated value of 4102,35. Over 64% of food retail networks are located in Chisinau. The study is preliminary, being the basis of complex research, which is to be developed within the doctoral training program.
