This paper proposes a new framework for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) that aims at moving the Business and Society research field beyond the dominant functionalist paradigm. Burrell and Morgan’s (1979) grid of analysis is mobilized to develop an alternative framework for CSR. This framework distinguishes four perspectives on the corporation- society interface which give rise to four approaches to CSR: CSR as a social regulatory function, CSR as a power relationship, CSR as a cultural product and CSR as a sociocognitive construction. The article shows how the framework can be used to “de-functionalize” research on the corporation-society interface, account for the most recent conceptual developments in the CSR field, and construct a renewed research agenda for CSR.
