The Determinants of Urban Unemployment in India

Deepak Lal

Indian Economic Review, 1988, vol. 23, issue 1, 61-81

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which job search type structural unemployment models can explain the changing levels of urban unemployment in India. Our analysis shows that changes in the level of employment exchange registration are likely to reflect the excess demand for public sector jobs rather than the extent of open urban unemployment. A simple form of " bumping" model seems to fit well the available National Sample Survey data on male urban employment.
