Abstract: The paper analyses India's export performance in the period 1965-80 by decomposing changes in India's share of world exports into the competitive and market growth effects. Using this decomposition it is found that the decline in India's share of world exports of all commodities, agricultural goods, non-oil raw materials and manufactures was due to the competitive factor. The behaviour of India's exports is in contrast to that of exports of a sample of 13 other developing countries in Asia and Latin America. Most of the other countries improved their share of world exports as their competitiveness improved, particularly as far as manufactured exports were concerned. The contrast was especially sharp in the post 1973 period. Again in contrast to the experience of other countries in the sample India saw a large decline in her share of world exports of manufactures to developing countries in the post 1973 period. Changes in competitiveness are not explained by price and exchange rate movements.
