Indian Economic Review, 1990, vol. 25, issue 1, 33-45

Abstract: Production of coal from opencast and underground mines involves different mix of technological, capital, labour, energy and material input configurations. Planning and designing of coal mine operations depend partly on these input characteristics and partly on scale factors which are based on geological considerations. Using a translog cost model for mining operations with capital, labour material and energy as four major inputs, hypotheses on scale and substitution possibilities are tested. Cross-section data from two coal companies in India are used to empirically test alternative production specifications and hypotheses.
